Getting an item back from Beijing airport

I had a transit a Beijing Capital (PEK). I made the fatal mistake of leaving my ebook reader on the plane. At this point, getting it back seems impossible (short of going back for it in person). I tried quite a lot.

I lost my item on the way there and on the way back I already asked the airport information desk if there’s a lost-and-found and whether they found any item like mine on my flight’s day. Amusingly the information person at an international (transit) airport spoke absolutely zero English. After a short machine-translated exchange I was given a negative answer. But I didn’t give up.

The adventures of Kobo and Rakuten points

I occasionally buy stuff off Rakuten. It’s mostly just herbs, but gradually points do build up. I also have a Kobo Libra reader. Kobo is a subsidiary of Rakuten, so you can log in with a Rakuten account and all that “integration.”

The other day I noticed that finally the newest volume of No Game No Life came out, so I went to get it. That took unexpected effort. The payment process just kept failing with an extremely unhelpful “we can’t complete this transaction” error. Naturally it wouldn’t say what was wrong, even though as it turns out it was their system’s brainfart.
