purevolume

purevolume™ (strictly always with that “™” note there) is once again a music website, with a few community features, so that they won’t be labeled a “den of copyright infringement”, in other words: an mp3 download site. You know, i’m not that very social kind of guy, who joins a web community and goes woot posting his stuff everywhere, commenting, rating and such. I have to be very dedicated to do that, and in this case, i am definitely not. Still, this purevolume impressed me at first: it has info and even music of the japanese punk band Samurai Attack (actually that’s how i found the site on Google), which indicates this is something serious. But this site’s not perfect either–on a perfect site of this kind, i could find any music i happened to look for–since i couldn’t listen to a second of Paradise Lost material. Furthermore, larger (and even better known) bands, such as Nightwish are also hard to find, or are not present at all, or (what’s even worse) fake ones are there, which is a huge problem–i think it’s due to the open registration of the artists. The site design is simple and nice, i like it, even though for some it may be a bit too simple, but at least it has hardly any flash (only the media player and some ad animations, as far as i’ve seen), unlike Deezer. From the developer point of view, the links and urls, and thus the site is quite easy to break, so for example if you take that link below to my user profile, and remove “home” from the end, it’ll return an error, even though it should still make sense (in my opinion, such urls should work even when pieces are removed one after another). The gig locator feature doesn’t seem to work outside of the States at all either. Why are all such sites like they were just opened yesterday–this one has to grow a lot too. Anyway, i joined today, so add me as a friend, if you’re there too.

Deezer

I’ve read about this service at mandark, and checked it out almost immediately–now after having tried it out, having built a playlist and such, i now write my first impressions. The very first impression was “man, they don’t know of UTF-8?”, because the hungarian interface (to which it automatically switched for me) is a tragedy. The translations are not bad, but the absolutely Flash-based interface simply doesn’t display characters like “ő” or “ű”, and it has problems with the simpler ones too (i know tried out the chinese one too, and that’s even more hopeless: all texts are “undefined”, and no chinese characters show up, though the service remains usable, if you know which button is what). The system was not easy to get used to at first, probably because this language problem–but one i switched to english, it all became a lot easier. Deezer is a community site, so you can add friends and all that stuff, though naturally the main point is not this, at least i have the feeling that nowadays all these sites launch as “community sites” to have some success (understandably).

Romeo + Juliet

The evening brought me Romeo + Juliet, the 1996 movie made from Shakespeare’s play. I wanted to write in the sixteenth century english the whole film is in, but i couldn’t. It’s sometimes not easy to understand at all, but to reproduce it, far exceeds my english knowledge. In the first moments i was a bit surprised that i could hardly understand a sentence (naturally later i got used to it), but as soon as the Capulet’s car rolled on stage at the petrol station i realised that this movie features the very original text–well, almost: Wikipedia lists a couple of changes, such as editing down the text for “modern audiences”, but still it was a unique experience, somewhat like the first few scenes of Dead Poets Society. The acting was great, the screenplay too, and just everything worked out so well–except for one thing, naturally (won’t specify). To be honest, this was my first meeting with Romeo and Juliet–i haven’t read it, seen it or heard it before this time–and it was a charming introduction… I wish i’d seen this before i wrote that remake of Romeo and Juliet–i’d have done it very differently, i think: first of all, i would’ve taken the time to write it in verse.

Butterfly Effect

In no relation with my earlier interest in chaos theory, i first met this movie at Mefi’s a long while ago. It took a while to get myself to sit down and watch it, but in the second run (in the first run on friday, i could only watch the first part of it) i watched it all, and it was great. In a sense… it’s just shocking how much a small difference change our lives–at least it could change the life of Evan a lot. He had the “same illness” as his father… Sometime he loses his conscience, and cannot remember anything. At least so he thinks.

I don’t think i’d suprise anyone by saying that he realises that his father may not have been that ill as he seemed. Evan was/is/will be–in my opinion–a lot more crazy than his father was back when they met. He realised that by reading his diaries he kept to save memories he could actually live through them again, though by that putting a huge strain on his body (the piling up memories of many possible lifes appeared as a blood patch (correct phrase?) in his brain). Worth it?

This movie is the exact opposite as what the Jurassic Park (in which the butterfly-effect is actually mentioned, by Ian Malcolm!) or the Terminator show: those movies say that time is a predefined, unchangeable thing, much like how Cromwell believed it, but the Butterfly Effect says that you could change the timeline if you went back in time–though the effects would be impossible to calculate. So very right. You should watch it.

Reality

I’ve just read a post at Mr. Tiny’s with the third part of the Zeitgeist documentary. I haven’t seen the first two parts, and i don’t plan to watch them, except if someone posts something interesting about them. This third one was enough to make me think. To think about how crazy this world is, and how crazy it ever was. I can’t believe anything i’m told, because i cannot be sure it’s true at all. There are sure trusted sources, my personal friends and people i know, but the internet in general is not. There are so many concepts about the order in this world, whether it exists or not, and if it does, what is it like, that reality is impossible to grasp. It’s like Harry Potter: you know it can’t be true, because if it was, then the magicians wouldn’t have let it be published… (And it’s also way too detailed.) The same goes for all the theories: if something is published, then it’s published with acknowledgement from the heads of the world (in case there is such a thing)… Then come two chances: either it’s true, and they let it be published because they are sure that no one would actually believe in it, or because it’s in no relation with realty. It doesn’t really matter, if it’s Umberto Eco’s Tres, or the Rockefellers, as long as there is someone up there. I know though: if the throne of the world was empty, if heaven was empty, then people (Aizen of Bleach) (would) have already occupied it. This world is so hopeless, i would run away.

Rollerblade

I just went out for a rollerskating session, and was out there for about one and a half hour, singing the chorus of Avantasia by the band named identically. It’s really catchy…

We are the power inside, we bring you fantasy.
We are the kingdom of light and dreams,
gnosis and life: Avantasia!

Avantasia by Avantasia

Now i’ll wash my hair, have a refreshing shower, and then after a quick and light dinner (greek salad, i think) i’ll watch (finally) the whole of Butterfly Effect. I was quite angry on friday about it, but naturally it was my fault (as always).

Soon.

Dead Poets Society

O Captain my Captain! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring

Walt Whitman

Yesterday evening i watched a movie, that possibly changed the lives of many… But not mine. Why? It certainly was an experience, watching this movie, but i have been trying to live how Mr. Keating taught his students, though most of the time, i have not been successful. It’s not an easy thing to break the rules just a little bit. Else you will end up how Charlie Dalton ended up, and Keating said it right: there’s a time to revolt, and there’s a time to remain silent. Maturity and the “serious thinking” kills the revolutionary spirit in almost everyone, and indeed poetry is one of the things that can save this. It’s very hard to tear apart the binds of the society, to free ourselves from the mud that we can see too clearly, from the inside… The Poets made me promise myself, that as soon as i can, i will start collecting poetry and generally all kinds of literature, and read a lot. Not as if i’d like to become a bookworm (more than i am now), but it really helps to open the mind.

Facts

  • A headache is no fun. Especially if it’s not really a headache, but a general feeling sick. It can make a day really entertaining.
  • RapidShare has its unique measurement system, be aware. “One hour” is 100 minutes according to them, just as a minute about 100 seconds, though i’m not sure about this part (yet). This misunderstanding caused a few minutes (SI sense) of surprise for me.
  • If everyone drinks around you, and this “everyone” consist of your family, you can see all little changes in their behaviour as they consume that dear alcohol. In my case: i don’t know if only i don’t see myself from outside when i drink normally (so it’s not the purpose to get very drunk) or others around me have lower threshold. This needs confirmation too.

Angry

I started watching Butterfly Effect as the movie for tonight, but suddenly it stopped. After a short investigation i realized that i only downloaded borrowed the first part of it—but there was no indication of any other part, just another bunch of links disks marked as “alternate”. Thanks a lot. That made my eve. I won’t see this movie for a while now, since it will take about that long to get the other part too (that shop won’t be open on the weekend). I don’t want to swear… tomorrow i’ll have to watch something really good.

We all know

There are really catchy verses out there. One of them is Connect the dots by Ayreon (sadly it’s not available on Last.fm yet—i hope it will be). And what makes it even better: the singer here is no one else than Ty Tabor of my much-loved band King’s X. This makes the lyrics sound even more authentic, seeing the problems King’s X songs are about.
