#hanairo

Spice and Wolf

I couldn’t really get myself to work today, instead i watched another anime i was planning to watch for a very long time, Spice and Wolf I finished the first season just now, and it was…

So beautiful. It’s set in the fictional middle-ages in a fictional land, but the whole story doesn’t feel like your usual fantasy story. It has lots of economy talk, since Lawrence, the male lead is a merchant, and there aren’t fairies or mages running around. Even when gods show up they feel real.

I usually don’t listen to the opening songs of anime, but in the case of Spice and Wolf the reason was different from usual: the song is very good, actually way too good. It feels so full of emotions i just couldn’t listen to it every time.

Generally the whole anime is touching on a level as tearjerker dramas, without being so sad. It’s just the story, the art, the characters, the music, it’s all so warm-

I lack words, sorry. Watch it and you shall understand.

Bakemonogatari

I had some free time yesterday, or not, but that doesn’t really matter, the point is i did an anime marathon and watched all 15 episodes of Bakemonogatari (化物語).

I won’t go into details because i realize i’m not good at writing reviews, so just the main characteristics: amazing art style, great story and character designs, a lot of word play and much humour. And action, and romance, and pretty much everything that can make an anime good, and this anime is good.

Or more than that, but “well, that’s like, my opinion”.

Stuff to watch and translate, spring 2011

Looking at what’s coming in the spring season, there’s plenty i’d want to check out, watch and possibly translate. As for the last, i’d do japanese to english on stuff that’s not simulcasted and i have the opportunity, and do english to hungarian on the stuff that’s simulcasted or someone else is doing it.

(Oretachi ni tsubasa wa nai)
2 (Kami nomi zo shiru sekai 2)
(Ao no exorcist)
(Denpa onna to seishun otoko)
  • Deadman Wonderland
  • C
  • A Channel
  • Sket Dance
(Hidan no Aria)
(Hana saku Iroha)
  • Steins;Gate
(Lotte no omocha)

And of course finish Xros Wars.

On “Seishinism”

Are you familiar with the title Shiki? There was an anime running last year with that title. It’s a really interesting and often disturbing horror piece. And there’s a character, a buddhist monk called Seishin, who has really… unique views on the world. If you didn’t watch the whole of the series yet, don’t read on.

Best anime openings?

What are the best anime openings ever? The first few that came to my mind were…

Any suggestions?

Digimon Xros Wars 23 english sub

The 23th episode of Xros Wars, titled “Ninja Zone, the ninja battle of laughter” marks a significant point in my path as a fansubber. This is the first sub that i myself release as a video (720p mkv thanks to CASO), and also the first subtitle that i timed all the way. It took hell a lot of time, but i think it’s at least enjoyable.

Yumekui Merry

Yumekui Merry (夢喰いメリー, Dreameater Merry) is a great anime. It centers around a dream demon called Merry Nightmare (what a contradictory and almost impossible to translate name) and Yumeji, a guy who has the ability to predict people’s dreams based on their auras. Merry tries to get back to the world of dreams, but for some reason, she can’t, and this is where the story starts.

Oh, did i say it’s a great anime? First, amazing graphics. Second, amazing music. Third, it’s just great. I can’t really remember any anime that could almost make me cry (it made my heart cry for sure) over the death of a minor character who only appeared like half an episode earlier. It’s… great.

Of course we’re subbing it. I can’t miss a chance to work with such a great (yeah, i’m lost for words) material. You should totally watch it.

Ore no Imouto

Ore no Imouto (full title 俺の妹がこんなに可愛いわけがない (ore no imouto ga konna ni kawaii wake ga nai), usually translated as “there’s no way my little sister is this cute”) was one of the best drawn anime in the 2010 autumn season. Had the competition been weaker, it would be the best without question, but Star Driver and a few others can be compared. And not only graphics, generally it was quite interesting and actually much more serious than one would expect from an anime centered around incest games and a similar situation “real life”. It was easily the best anime in the season that had some meaning to it (thus sorting out the likes of Panty and Stocking and Squid Girl). And it’s even funny.

Anime awards, 2010

I felt like i have to write this down: the best anime in the season is definitely Panty and Stocking, being on a level of awesomeness comparable only to FLCL. The most fabulous anime is obviously Star Driver. The best drawing award is either for Ore no Imoto or Star Driver. The best opening song is Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai, that’s simply great—but the overall best soundtrack is Panty and Stocking. The cutest moeblob is everyone’s beloved Squid Girl でげそ. The best seriously serious anime is Shiki, which also has a good chance of winning the best story award (there’s not much competition in that area though, maybe only Digimon Xros Wars and (who knows?) Star Driver could stand a chance). Best kids’ anime is without question Xros Wars.

Disagree? Feel free to. Suggest other anime as well if you wish.
