Blizzard pissed me off. Badly. It’s one thing that battle.net redirects me to the korean website, even though my account is south-east asian–apparently all japanese are considered to be able to speak korean too. But whatever, i got used to typing sea.battle.net instead of just battle.net.

Actually it was all fine when i got the game (StarCraft 2 we’re talking about here). I completed the campaign, wrote a blogpost about it and since then played against harder and harder AI’s. Not against humans for the sole reason that the people i would want to play with are in another region. And StarCraft 2 is geo-locked, just like World of Warcraft. Meaning you can’t play with people from other regions, and even if you got access to another region, your achievements and scores will be stored only for the region you got them in. Even better is that although SEA apparently got merged into the north american region, technically the two are still separate, just now i can have a NA character too. Great.

Community software my ass.

One of the “great advantages” of linux is its supposed community support and that it’s developed by the users and anyone can take part and… Okay, stop there. You can take part in development if you are a crazy programmer and are able to find all the newsgroups and mailing lists and bug report places where some of the actual development is going on. Community support is probably there, just i don’t seem to be able to find it.

I don’t know if linux development is still separated from the web and takes place in other parts of the internet, but whatever the case, usual searches, however i try to refine my queries, don’t really bring the results i look for. And if finally i get bored with googling for hours just to find something that seems at least related to the problem i’m having, but yet provides no help, and i go to ubuntuforums.com and post my supposedly idiotic etc questions, no one gives a fuck to respond. Community support is a really nice concept, but if the whole community is only asking questions and no answers, it’s no point. Also, on that very forum website, apparently necroposting (posting in old topics) is not possible. So even if i found a workaround around a problem googling for which led me to that topic, i can’t post any helpful response there. How clever. On anime fan forums where they are boasting with pride about the number of topics and stuff, banning necroposting is acceptable even if i don’t agree with it. But seriously, on a support forum?

Also it’s funny that i’m every now and then facing problems that looking at forum posts were problems five years ago as well. Here you go, fantastic development of linux! Not able to fix reported bugs in five years? And while it’s really nice if the system natively recognizes the media control buttons of my laptop and i can control my mail led just by echoing 1 into /sys/class/leds/asus ::mail/brightness, not being able to use my wireless, my infrared and my webcam’s permanently flipped upside down, and i have no way to fix it, now that ruins the picture.

I don’t get this. Linux was supposed to be the ideal operating system for servers. And yet, on Windows it takes roughly two clicks to download and install for example EasyPHP to get a working AMP (Apache-MySQL-PHP) server, while on linux…

The whole reason i had to reinstall Ubuntu was that the MySQL update would always hang, so would any attempt to remove it, thus blocking all other updates and virtually any installations as well. Definitely not fun. And now MySQL is haunting me again.

It’s really supposed to be simple. Install Apache, install MySQL, install PHP. So far it’s easy, three consecutive sudo apt-get install commands and there i go. Quick edit in the Apache config file, and my web folder is already online. PHP working out of the box. But not MySQL.

Just after the installation i vaguely recall being able to start it once in an attempt to test it (through command line). Then i exited, changed the data folder to the one shared with Windows and since then, no MySQL. Of course i made a backup copy of the default my.cnf, but reverting back to that didn’t help either.

I’m a bit fed up with mp3 tagging already. Seriously, i’m spending more time tagging my music collection than actually listening to it (obviously not true, since i’m listening while tagging as well), and it’s annoying. When i was using foobar on Windows, i had the impression that all my files were correctly tagged, i could mass-rename them to my scheme, it was all fine and working.

Then came childhood’s end, and i started facing problems. Many problems. First, apparently there’s no standard way to store replay gain information, or just all players ignore it and use their own way, because although my whole library had the replay gain calculated, the difference in volume is striking when playing on ipod. Also, ipod apparently requires some specific format to store the cover image in the files, so i have to add those manually too–after my first few searches for some automated method gave no results, i was just too lazy to look for it anymore.

But this was not all. Rhythmbox apparently can’t handle tags normally, favouring id3v1 tags even when id3v2 is present, and what’s worse, it writes its “unknown artist” tags into the files, so it’s not even simple to fix.

So now i just got fed up with the recently oft problem when the song title is longer than the allowed max for id3v1, and i decided to strip id3v1 once and for all. Unluckily, many files were left with “unknown”, but that’s still easier to find and fix than erroneous tags under correct tags, not even displayed most of the time.

Sziget rant

Néha úgy felmerül bennem a kérdés, hogy vajon a Sziget szervezői direkt velem akarnak-e kibaszni szórakozni, vagy csak most jutottak el odáig, hogy mit jelent a “jó zene” kifejezés. Ez utóbbi kétséges, mivel azért korábban is voltak igen jó felhozatalok (lásd amikor ott voltam két éve)… Tavaly mentem haza nyáron, erre a Sziget egy nagy nulla volt, idén meg szinte esélytelen, hogy össze tudnék kaparni annyi pénzt, erre a Szigetnek olyan felhozatala van, hogy ahogy olvasom, két másodpercenként kell megpihennem, nehogy szívrohamot kapjak.

Iron Maiden, Toy Dolls, Paradise Lost, Skindred… (Valahogy mind angol…)

És az Iron Maiden kivételével elég nagy az esély rá, hogy nem jönnek Japánba – hiszen itt nagyjából ismeretlenek.

Vajon a Szigetesek próbálnak provokálni, hogy ne melózzak a nyáron és ne menjek Kínába ősszel, hanem verjem el az összes pénzem egy hazaútra? (Meg persze balatoni buli, lakásavató, satöbbi is van…)

Először is, volt ma egy órám. Szombaton. Nem lenne ez különösebben gond, ha azt mondják, hogy elmaradt egyszer, be kell pótolni. Vagy valami hasonló. De se szó, se beszéd közlik emailben, hogy ott kell lenni. Meg a kurva anyátok. Ráadásul még ha valami új lett volna, de nem. Beraktak egy előadást az egyetemi könyvtárról szombatra, az egyetemi könyvtárról, amiről legalább egyszer ha nem kétszer volt eddig előadás/orientáció. És a manusz még komolyan is vette, hogy az az ötven ember a háromszázból síri csöndben hallgassa és jegyzeteljen. A kollektív tudás így is győzött. (Magyarul tizen csak sikerült összehoznunk a válaszokat az óra végi kérdéseire.) Gondoltam megkérdezem, hogy szolgál a kedves édesanyja egészsége, de nem hiszem, hogy értette volna.

A másik, hogy nem lehet normális marhahúst kapni. pörköltet akartam ma csinálni, de a Beishiában csak yakinikuhoz felvagdalt marha volt, a szomszéd hentesnél meg hétezer (!) (!!!) jent kérnek el egy olyan darab marhahúsért, ami a Hanamasában ötszáz jen lett volna. Azért néha tényleg hiányzik Tokió. Így nem éppen pörkölt lesz belőle, de ehető (remélem). Soknak mindenképp sok.

Ennyi a dühöngésből, a többi már jobb lesz.

Probably i’m the stupid one, but this is not the first time tagging mp3 files almost drove me crazy. Never had any such problems on Windows though, i could do whatever i wanted with foobar, or if i happened to be in the mood to give a track different id3v1 and id3v2 tags, Winamp. Not on linux though. I use Rhythmbox for music playback, edit tags with EasyTAG and do more serious stuff like stream tweaking and replay gain calculating with MP3 Diags. Today i copied an old Sex Machineguns (japanese heavy metal band) album from a backup cd, and wanted to fix the tags with the correct japanese spellings etc. That’s where the fun began. In the beginning all tags were in english or romanized japanese. I changed the tags with EasyTAG and saved both id3v1 and v2. Calculated replay gain with MP3 Diags, and then realised that the id3v1 tags have the japanese text messed up, although it was saved in utf-8–which, as it turns out, isn’t all that well supported in v1. So i deleted the v1 streams with Diag, and all seemed fine. Then i imported it all into Rhythmbox and as if nothing changed, it was still displaying the english-romaji titles. Neither with EasyTAG nor Diag could i see where it gets that data from, it even showed that after i theoretically purged everything but my selected streams with Diag. Tryed again a couple of times and before my nervous breakdown i decided to launch the Windows 7 virtual machine, install foobar and do it there. I was done in half a minute, and it’s working all right. Windows scored.

Nem akarok tucatember lenni. A vasútállomáson bemondják, hogy amennyiben a következő gyorsra vár a kedves utas, a fehér háromszög jelzésnél, amennyiben a személyre, a kör jelzésnél szíveskedjenek kettesével sorakozni. Én pedig akkor fölállok a padról, végigsétálok a sárga vonal “rossz” oldalán (értsd, úristen, mindjárt beesik a vágányra a felelőtlen külföldi! vagy nem) aztán amikor beáll a vonat, valahogy felszállok. És nem arról van szó, hogy Japán szűk, és százharminc-negyven millióan lakják, úgyhogy kellenek a szabályok, mert Tokióban, ahol egy állomáson bármely időpillanatban van annyi ember, mint itt Hikonében egy év alatt összesen, és ugyan sorakoztak, de legalább nem szólítottak föl rá. Mert amíg az emberek csinálják, hadd csinálják, csak tőlem ne várják el. Biztos lesznek súlyos társadalmi problémáim ezzel a mentalitással, de köszönöm, az elmúlt húsz és fél évben (de rossz leírni) azért megvoltam vele.

Néha megijedek, hogy én is olyan kiállhatatlan ember vagyok/leszek, mint.

Amikor mondom, hogy nekem nem kellenek a tucattermékek, akkor is erről van szó. Amíg van alternatíva, nem akarok ugyanolyan telefonnal, mp3 lejátszóval, cipővel, karórával, hajzattal rohangálni, mint a fejlett társadalmak milliárdnyi embere. Egyszerűen taszít a tömegdivat, de sokszor nem érzem, hogy az alternatívák bármivel is jobbak lennének. Ahhoz meg nem vagyok elég elszánt, hogy mindent magamnak csináljak… Sajnos (?) az a kor már pár ezer éve letűnt.

Évekig képzeltem azt, hogy én majd megélek valaha is abból, hogy webfejlesztek. Egyszer majd lehet, természetesen változatlanul, ha megkér valaki, össze tudok rakni egy php-mysql-(x)html-css-javascript oldalt különösebb nehézségek nélkül, kisebb erőfeszítések árán még akár valami normálisabb kinézet is sikerül… De valahogy nem volt továbblépés. Biztos én se veszem komolyan, végül is évek óta képtelen vagyok akár csak a blog motorját végre normálisan befejezni. (Igaz, most minden eddiginél közelebb kerül hozzá.) Arra akarok kilyukadni, hogy ugyan mostanában nem elsősorban webfejlesztő vagyok, azért még talán képben vagyok valamennyire, ha erről van szó. (Néha magam is meglepődök, milyen jól sikerül keresőbarátra megfogalmazni adott bejegyzéseket…)

Tehát van egyszer az, hogy valaki privát blogot ír, vagy rejtegeti a twitterét, hasonlók, és ezt nem értem. Nyilván túl sokat okoskodtam kölyökkoromban, azért mondogatták annyit, hogy indulj ki magadból, de a lényeg, hogy bejött. Nekem a neten publikus mindenem, semmi nincs elrejtve (kivéve a fejlesztés alatt álló új blogmotort, mert biztosan sebezhető és nem hiányzik hogy széthackeljék belőle a szervert). Ha valamit titokban akarok tartani, akkor azt nem rakom ki a netre. Van egy jó kis füzetem, abba gyűltek, és gyűlhetnek az ilyen írások. És pláne nagyon zavar, ha valaki csak elejtett félmondatokkal jelzi, hogy igen, van blogja/twittere/hasonlója, de nem köti az orromra. Akkor fogd be.

A másik pedig, hogy mintha lelassult volna az internet fejlődése. Emlékszem, amikor először érkeztem a netre, jó tíz éve, milyen weboldalak voltak “jók”, mi volt a minőségi és hogy működtek. Lehet, hogy csak pont egy robbanás idején értem a sodorba, de mintha az XHTML1.1+CSS2.1-el megállt volna az internetes világ. Előbbi 2001-től W3C ajánlás, utóbbi még mindig csak ajánlás javaslat. Tehát az elmúlt tíz évben semmit nem fejlődött nagyjából az internet leírónyelve, csak több lett benne a JavaScript, mert az tényleg robbant. Valahogy öt évre visszanézve nem érzem, hogy annyit változott volna a világ, ugyanez az az előtti öt évre. De 1995-2000-ig mi zajlott? Létrejött az internet, ahogy ma ismerjük, nagyjából. Megjegyzem, a CSS3 2001 óta készül. Komolyan tíz évbe telik? Hol a lendület?
